Mission

The mission of Parents Ask is to enhance parental communication skills and increase collaboration between parents of children with special needs and schools resulting in home environments that support children as learners by creating an Individual Education Home Plan.

Vision

To develop a nationally-recognized model that educates parents in Simplified Spanish and Simplified English on how to create home learning environments based on quality research, best practices and Simplified Language

Rationale

A 1984 study found that most of the Special Education language was at a 9th grade level. The language got harder over time, a 2014 study found that most of the language used in Special Education today was at a grade 13 level ; that is college level.

Objective 1: Develop Strategies for Providing Family-Centered, Home-Based  opportunities  for children to learn utilizing an Individual Education Home Plan designed by the child and the family specifically for their home environment.

  1. Help parents and siblings identify learning opportunities that include a mix of planned and unplanned, structured and unstructured, and intentional and unintentional learning experiences for the child with disabilities.
  2. Offer parenting classes and seminars that addresses a topic parents have identified as an interest or concern.
  3. Encourage parents to visit their child’s program and observe other people interacting with their child.
  4. Encourage parents to share concerns with other professionals who work with their child,
  5. Encourage parents to contribute books, brochures, or information on parenting groups and parenting workshops.
Objective 2: Improve parent engagement and communication with school through consistent parent workshops and webinars in Spanish and English.

  2. Establish a Parents Ask Professional Periodical Community Advisory Board and host regular meetings to improve the quality of the community outreach programs and workshops.

Objective 3: Development and dissemination of special education parent toolkit in Spanish.
  • Significance
  1. This toolkit is organized by the key transition points that a child with a disability experiences in their education; from entry into elementary school, elementary to middle school, middle to high school and high school to college.
  2. The toolkit will prioritize needed actions and plans that need to occur between parents and educators.

  1. Parent engagement and service is an integral part of the mission of Parents Ask
  2. Parents ask has already established extensive partnerships with a significant number of community leaders and stakeholders.
  3. A strong parent engagement component will place Parents Ask at an advantageous position when applying for foundation funds.
